Durham Region Law Firm | Oshawa Family Lawyers

Durham Law Firm

The History of our Firm

The firm Elliott & Hughes was formed in 1990 by Glenn Elliott and Jayne E. Hughes. Over the years, it has become one of the most established and well-respected law firms in Durham Region. In 2008, Ms Hughes was appointed a Justice of the Superior Court of Justice and asked a local family, wills and estates lawyer, Sophie Hills, to assume her practice. Since then, Glenn and Sophie have continued the firm, practicing in association as Elliott & Hills. Sophie is joined in her practice by Helen Nolan, Tasneem Alibhai, Aruna Persaud, Suzette Moss and Amanda M. Case.

At Elliott & Hills, we focus on the forest and the trees — the big picture as well as the small details. We are results-oriented lawyers who never lose sight of the overall goal. We manage legal complexity and provide personal service and support to our clients at every step in the process.

Building Trust

When you are facing a potentially contentious and emotionally charged legal issue like a separation or divorce, you need a lawyer you feel comfortable with — someone you can trust to look out for your best interests. We begin building a constructive working relationship at the initial consultation. We will put you at ease by listening to your concerns. We'll explain how we can help in plain English, not legalese. We will give you an overview of the legal situation and our opinion regarding the likely outcome of the issue. We will explain the different options for moving forward, including mediation, negotiation, collaborative family law or, as a last resort, litigation.  You will leave with written notes and a clear sense of what decisions you need to make and the information you need to make them.

Throughout the process, you will be kept informed of developments in your case. Your calls and e-mails will be returned promptly. Our clients appreciate that we are warm, friendly and accessible as well as skilled and straightforward in our approach.

Providing Efficient, Cost-Effective Services

We have developed a reputation for providing efficient, fair and cost-effective legal services. We help our clients avoid, or resolve problems in the most professional and effective way possible. Whenever possible, we encourage the resolution of disputes outside of court to avoid the emotional and financial costs of litigation.

We limit the number of cases we accept so that we can give each client and each case the personal attention they deserve.

Our office is located in Oshawa, Ontario, across from the Oshawa Centre's main entrance. The office offers ample free parking and is accessible to people with disabilities.  To arrange a consultation, please contact Elliott & Hills by e-mail or call 1 (905) 571-1774. We represent clients from throughout the Durham Region of Ontario.

To Our Valued Clients:

The lawyers and staff at Hills Nolan are taking all necessary precautions to ensure that we keep our work family, our clients and our colleagues as safe as possible during these extraordinary times. We have shifted our office to “virtual” spaces and we will be having meetings by telephone or videoconferences (using Zoom, a video platform). Please contact your lawyer or the responsible clerk via email. Currently, our receptionist and a limited number of staff are attending to deliveries, telephone calls and real estate transactions.

Given the rapidly changing conditions, this may change based on government directives or recommendations. We will do our best to keep you informed in a timely manner if conditions change and we need to adjust our current arrangements. For any new clients, please use the “Contact Us” link on our website.

Any deliveries of documents that cannot be emailed can be brought to the rear door of the office between 9 am and 5 pm. If you intend to drop off any documents, please call our receptionist to let her know. Please ring the bell at the back door and someone will be with you.

The health and well-being of our staff, our clients and our community is our highest priority. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this rather unique time! We must all do our part to “flatten the curve”.

We look forward to continuing to assist you in the same professional, high quality manner that you expect from all of us at Hills Nolan.
